Founded in mid-2010, Accord Energy Solutions are an independent, specialist hydrocarbon accounting consultancy with offices in the UK and Australia. Our founding directors, Alan, Phil and James, came directly from senior roles in the busy and ever-changing consultancy industry. In Accord, they were determined to build a business with stability and staying power — one that would reward the dedication of both clients and staff.

We are 40+ qualified experts in a variety of relevant specialisms, with deep industry experience — a team well-equipped to provide informed and professional support to clients on hydrocarbon measurement, allocation, system delivery and quality assurance. Our independent status allows us to deliver these services and support clients with balance and impartiality.

Employee Ownership

Accord was the first Employee Owned start-up in Scotland. During the establishment of the business we consulted with a variety of ‘EO’ businesses to get a fuller understanding and learn from their journeys. A cornerstone of our development is our ongoing transition to full Employee Ownership, and since 2019 the Accord Employee Ownership Trust has held a majority 51% stake in the business.

In real terms, Employee Ownership means that each member of the Accord team has a stake in the business, and are invested in delivering excellent work to support our clients. The stability and security that comes with this approach has been advantageous in retaining highly skilled staff — a benefit that is passed on to our clients, who can count on developing long-term working relationships with our team.

Our History

SEPTEMBER 2023

New Brand & Website Launched

Having comfortably passed the 10-year mark as a business, Accord decided to explore the opportunity to refresh its brand and digital presence, working with Aberdeen-based agency FortyTwo Studio throughout 2022-23 to develop a new brand identity and website.

Expansion of Employee Posts

Following the retirement of Alan Spence from the Board, we decided to expand our employee representation across the EOT and Board. Rebecca Mackenzie and Gordon Inglis became appointed Directors and two new employee-elected Director posts were created.

Also, on the EOT, an additional employee-elected Trustee post was created. Elections were held in 2022 and we welcomed Dave Holland and Tamara Thomson to the Board and Eddy Coman and Helen Corbett to the EOT.

MAY 2020

Australia Office Opens

A new Accord office opened in Perth, Western Australia midway through 2020 — a strategic move to ensure full, responsive and direct support to clients in the Australian market.

Moved into Premises on Carden Place, Aberdeen

The business moved HQ to Carden Place — a new home in Aberdeen’s leafy west end for a growing team of specialist hydrocarbon accounting professionals.

EOT Reaches 51% Stake

Another significant day in Accord’s employee ownership story, as the Employee Ownership Trust reached a controlling 51% stake in the business — ensuring that all key decisions are taken in the long-term interests of the whole staff team.

Alan Spence Retires, Remains on Board

Founding Director Alan Spence, who had played a pivotal role in both the establishment of the business and its journey to employee ownership, decided to retire in 2018, but continues to support Accord as a Director on the Board.

Establishment of EOT, First Employee Elections to EOT and Board

A key milestone in Accord’s transition to full employee ownership, as the Employee Ownership Trust was established to represent employees and their stake in the business. The first elections to the Trust were held and two members of staff were also elected as Employee Directors on the Board.

First SIP Dealing Day

Accord established an HMRC-approved Share Incentive Plan (SIP) — giving employees direct ownership in a tax-efficient manner. The SIP now holds 21% of the equity of the company and has a founder shareholder, an employee and an independent external trustee on its governing board.

Accord Energy Solutions Ltd was founded by James Arthur, Alan Spence and Phil Stockton — three experienced hydrocarbon accountancy professionals who aimed to provide a truly independent and specialist hydrocarbon accounting resource base for the oil and gas industry.
