At this year's Global Flow Measurement Workshop in Norway, Phil presented the paper “Verification and Reconciliation of Gas Composition Using Ultrasonic Speed of Sound,” authored by Phil, Daniel, Juan, Bob, and Allan from Accord, in collaboration with Graeme Birks from Total Energies.
The paper presents the development of a new approach that uses physical measurements from ultrasonic flare gas flow meters to verify whether reported flare gas compositions truly reflect actual flowing compositions, and to reconcile discrepancies when they occur.
Accord have identified and developed a methodology to perform a verification-check of estimated flare gas compositions, by sampling, modelling or other means, and wherein a discrepancy is identified, algorithmically reconcile the estimate providing a composition more reflective of the true flow.
The work uses the Combustor application, which calculates Combustion Efficiency (CE), Destruction Efficiency (DE), and emission rates for Carbon Dioxide (CO₂), Methane (CH₄), and the overall Carbon Dioxide Equivalent (CO₂e) produced during natural gas flaring.
